With offices in New York and Geneva, Switzerland FI succinctly describes itself in its vision statement: “We are a Franciscan voice at the United Nations protecting the vulnerable, the forgotten, and our wounded earth.” With the help of the members of the diverse Franciscan Family (including its largest body of all, the Order of Franciscan Seculars (OFS), popularly known as the Third Order), FI educates, animates and advocates to protect the environment, reduce and eventually eliminate extreme poverty, and promote peace throughout the world.
According to the World Bank, over 1.4 billion people live on $1.25/day or less. From the darkened and yellowed skies of Beijing to the polluted lakes, streams and rivers of Illinois, human health throughout the world is threatened by pollution; and tens of millions of people are internally displaced or made refugees by wars and other forms of armed conflict. Through its attention to the experiences of Franciscans at the grass roots and the people with whom they live and serve, Franciscans International puts human faces on what could otherwise be mind-numbing heart-paralyzing statistics and challenges members of the United Nations to live up to the commitments they have made.
