...what can go wrong?

This is by far the strangest thing that I have ever done. I have taken up the religious habit of the Capuchin Franciscans. Here’s what a typical person might say about me: “Why would any healthy, (mostly) sane young adult male start walking down this path? And at the age of 19? Surely he must realize that this is the 21st century. These days, commitment is rare among youth and religious practice is even rarer...and that’s to say nothing of religious commitment!” To be honest, I’m often at a loss for answers...

New Vocation Director

Let the brothers not be possessive of their work. Rather, let them be committed and open to the needs of the local fraternity, the circumscription, and the Order, and always ready to move on. -Constitutions of the Capuchin Friars Minor, 79 The philosopher Heraclitus supposedly said, “the only thing constant in life is change”. As I reflect on the changes happening in my life at this moment, I find some consolation in the constancy of change. Change is natural and good and has the ability to lead us- when we trust God to accompany us- to experience...

A Day to Celebrate and a Call to Service and Brotherhood

Thursday of the 5th Week of Easter This Saturday, April 30 two of our Capuchin brothers, Tien Dinh and Tom Nguyen, will be ordained priests at the St. Lawrence Seminary Chapel.  Tien and Tom are SLS alumni, and they will receive this sacrament at the hands of another alumnus, the Most Rev. David Zywiec, a friar who currently serves as Auxiliary Bishop for the Apostolic Vicariate of Bluefields, Nicaragua. These presbyteral ordinations are notable for several reasons.  Tom and Tien are the first two Vietnamese friars in our province to be ordained priests, just as they were the first...
