Discernment Doesn't End with Novitiate

(Bro. Parker Tiffany has completed his third year of temporary vows as a Capuchin. In this post, he describes the ongoing discernment process during summers for Capuchins in temporary vows.) For every friar in post novitiate, summers are spent at fraternities throughout the province. In initial stages of formation, opportunities to get to know the province can be limited especially in novitiate. Often friars are interested in the “new guys,” whether it is candidates, postulants, novices or post novices, so in an effort for post novices to gain experience outside the formation house while getting to know other fraternities, summer...

Candidates Learn about Solanus Casey's Spirituality

Four Candidates for the Midwest Candidates gathered in Detroit for the snowy weekend of February 15-17 to learn more about the Spirituality of Venerable Solanus Casey, a Capuchin simplex priest who died in Detroit in 1957 and is on the verge of becoming blessed, the final stage before being declared a saint. The weekend had six segments. On Friday evening, we began by viewing a movie to familiarize ourselves with the life of Solanus. Candidates typically are most interested in Solanus' vocational journey, as it seems very modern to them with many starts and stops, wrong directions, and seeming barriers. Whether...

Solanus' Plan for Holiness

The weekend of February 15-17, The Capuchin Vocation Office is sponsoring a weekend for candidates and inquirers on the spirituality of Capuchin Solanus Casey. An earlier post tells of his life. Here I wish to share Solanus' plan for holiness, which he followed after the age of 26. Here's some background and the plan. Once in the Capuchin seminary, Solanus knew he needed to purify his heart to prepare for lifelong service for God. He wanted to detach himself from any unhealthy worldly desire. He wanted to submit to God's will through prayer and contemplation. He wrote out a plan. He...

Why a Vocation Weekend on Solanus Casey?

The weekend of February 15-17, the Capuchins are hosting inquirers and candidates on a Detroit gathering to learn about their brother Father Solanus Casey (+1957) whose cause for sainthood is being pursued. Solanus is buried in Detroit in a Center that bares his name, which hundreds of thousands visit each year. Why are we hosting this weekend? Because we believe Solanus' struggles with his vocation are very modern and will touch many of our discerners on their own journey. Contact Fr. Bill Hugo if you want to attend (313-595-2182; WilliamHugo1253@gmail.com). Here's some information about Barney (Solanus was his...
