Detroit Ministry Weekend 2015 Revisited

2015-10-24 10.17.39

This year we were blessed to have seven young men join us on the Detroit Ministry Weekend, in the hopes of further discerning their call to religious life. The three day event saw the group visiting many of our Capuchin ministries, in order to better gain a feel for how Capuchins live and minister in Metro-Detroit.

The weekend began on Friday with Evening Prayer at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit. The Capuchin community at St. Bonaventure graciously played host to the Detroit Ministry Weekend as they have for many years, providing both lodging and invaluable insight into the life of the Friars. Bro. Richard Merling then conducted a tour of the well-known Solanus Casey Center, a place of pilgrimage and prayer in Metro-Detroit.

The next morning saw the group touring the Capuchin Soup Kitchen (CSK) ministries, led by the multi-talented Bro. Bob Malloy, the Pastoral Director for the CSK. The group visited the Meldrum Street site of the Soup Kitchen, the Capuchin Services Center, and the On The Rise Bakery, where they were able to sample some of the famous baked goods sold there.

What followed was a trip to the Capuchin Retreat Center in Washington, Michigan, where everyone was treated to a primer on Franciscan Spirituality by Bro. Bill Hugo, followed by a period of prayerful reflection on the beautiful grounds.

The group then returned to St. Bonaventure where they enjoyed supper with the community, before attending a Holy Hour where the guys were free to talk about their experiences that day in the presence of our Lord. Finally on Sunday, the group attended Mass at the St. Bonaventure Chapel at the Solanus Casey Center, where they were warmly welcomed by the worshipping community there.

In addition to the seven young men attending the weekend, Bro. Bill Hugo, Vocation Director for the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph and Bro. Jason D. Graves, Assistant Vocation Director for the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph were also in attendance, conducting the weekend. Lastly, the group was privileged to have Bro. Edwin Delgado (pictured on the right, with Bro. Jerry Smith) joining them on the weekend so that he could see our ministries in Detroit. Bro. Edwin is a visiting Friar from the Capuchin Province of Peru who has been living in Chicago at the formation house of St. Clare of Assisi.

All in all, it was a fun and exciting weekend for everyone. If you missed it, please consider attending the weekend next year, and possibly consider attending the Discovering Postulancy program in January 2016. Follow the link for more information.
